So it is important that we do not lose the transaction logs. However we can safely purge the logs for the transactions have been completed successfully.<\/p>\n<p>To free up the disk space used by the transaction log you need to perform the below steps.<\/p>\n<p>1. Take a backup of the transaction log.<br \/>2. Shrink the log file.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Take a backup of the transaction log.<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You can either execute the following statements through the browser<\/p>\n<p>You need to first create a backup device<br \/>EXEC sp_addumpdevice &#8216;disk&#8217;, &#8216;AdvWorksData&#8217;,<br \/>&#8216;C:\\SQLServerBackups\\AdvWorksData.bak&#8217;;<\/p>\n<p>Next backup the entire database first before you backup the log file<br \/>&#8212; Back up the full AdventureWorks database.<br \/>BACKUP DATABASE AdventureWorks TO AdvWorksData;<br \/>GO<\/p>\n<p>Now that a backup has been created of the entire database, you can back up the transaction log file.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; Back up the AdventureWorks log.<br \/>BACKUP LOG AdventureWorks<br \/>TO AdvWorksLog;<\/p>\n<p>Note: It is important that you take a backup of the database before you take a backup of the log file as otherwise you will receive the following error.<\/p>\n<p><span>Msg 4214, Level 16, State 1, Line 1<br \/>BACKUP LOG cannot be performed because there is no current database backup.<br \/>Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1<br \/>BACKUP LOG is terminating abnormally.<br \/><\/span><br \/>Also you need to make sure that the Recovery model of the database is set to \u201cFull\u201d. By default the recovery model of CRM database is Simple.<\/p>\n<p>Or through the UI, backup the log file using the following steps<\/p>\n<p>Right Click dataset &#8211;> Backup\u2026<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_pMlyDuF-ngc\/SxzG55jxNII\/AAAAAAAAAQM\/GgCO78wib6k\/s1600-h\/1.jpg\"><span><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_pMlyDuF-ngc\/SxzG55jxNII\/AAAAAAAAAQM\/GgCO78wib6k\/s400\/1.jpg\"><\/span><\/a><span><br \/>Select backup type as Full and take a complete backup of the database.<\/p>\n<p>Once this backup completes. You now change the backup type to Transaction Log and in the options tab check for the following<\/p>\n<p><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_pMlyDuF-ngc\/SxzG5sXn2oI\/AAAAAAAAAQE\/g2tWHcsw_4U\/s1600-h\/2.jpg\"><span><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_pMlyDuF-ngc\/SxzG5sXn2oI\/AAAAAAAAAQE\/g2tWHcsw_4U\/s400\/2.jpg\"><\/span><\/a><span><\/p>\n<p><b><u>Shrink the log file.<\/u><\/b><\/p>\n<p>You can run the following statements<\/p>\n<p>DBCC SHRINKFILE(mscrm_log, 2)<\/p>\n<p>Mscrm_log is the logical file name of the Log file created for CRM database.<br \/>2 \u2013 is the target size specified.
